You know those mornings when the air feels sweet, the birds are chirping and life has this "summer is coming" feel? That’s the essence of The Sun card. It’s the card that says: warmth is here, the universe shines on you, life-force energy is yours.

But there’s a lesson here (always)... joy isn’t just something that happens to us. It’s something we allow. The Sun reminds you to drop the self-consciousness, stop dimming your light, let yourself be fully seen, feel the radiance of your highest self, revel in the joy this life offers us - consciously.

This post forms part of my Tarot Explainer Series where I give you quick, practical lessons on how to actually live with the energies of the minor and major arcana (the cards in a tarot deck). Every card is a storyline - and this is how you embrace, embody, and be guided by the secrets within it. This post captures my in-depth advice if you have pulled this card in a reading...

The Sun Speed Round

  • The Sun belongs to the Major Arcana — the journey of the soul’s awakening.

  • Astrologically, it connects to the Sun itself: identity, vitality, and purpose.

  • In the classic imagery, a child rides a white horse beneath a blazing sun and waving banner — innocence, optimism, renewal.

  • Related cards? The Star (hope after darkness), The Fool (pure joy and faith), and Judgment (awakening).

  • Keywords: Upright = joy, vitality, success, truth, clarity.

  • Reversed = burnout, inflated ego, disillusionment, temporary gloom.

Core meanings

Upright, The Sun is your inner radiance breaking through doubt. It’s confidence without arrogance, success without needing validation. It's happy energy... plain and simple. Its happy, light and filled with joy. I relate it to the feeling of a carnival ... rides, cotton candy, fun, laughter and blissful joy.

Reversed, it can show when you’re struggling to access happiness; when comparison or exhaustion dims your inner light. It also reflects a chosen depression and apathy.

Journal prompt: Where do I feel safe to shine, and where do I still hide my joy?

Lessons

Spiritually, The Sun reminds us that our light is always there, waiting to be sought... waiting to be revisited, remembered or tapped into. It is an energy that doesn’t need permission but requires your allowing. In work, it’s the card of life-force joy, grateful-to-be-alive-ness, happy momentum, life purpose joy... it feels like an “everything is flowing” moment.

In love, it’s authenticity and warmth; partnerships where both people thrive individually and together in their individual soul purpose and mutual companionship in this lifetime.

Embracing: Let people see you. Don’t shrink to make others comfortable. Move toward and follow your joy. Express your inner life force energy. Lean into happiness.

Embodying: Spend time outdoors. Cuddle your animals. Nourish your physical vitality. If you can, go for ocean swims!

In practice

For self-reflection: identify what genuinely makes you feel alive (not what looks good online).

For decision-making: choose the path that feels expansive, not impressive. Something that mskes you truly feel like you're being lit up.

For a daily ritual: morning sun meditation or gratitude practice focused on what’s already good. SWIM! Cold plunge / cold shower.

Conclusion

The Sun teaches that joy is yours - if you can notice it. You don’t need to earn it. Feel and chase your joy! Then, let your light touch others - in doing so, it multiplies, not diminishes.

Every card is a lesson, but you are the creator who chooses that path forward. Remember to read meanings in the context of other cards and your own intuition.
